Beer sommelier training

The training as a beer sommelier gives you deep insights into the world of beer variety and the art of brewing. In addition, you will learn how to tap and present beer properly, how to create a beer menu and how to advise guests on food pairing. Within the course of our popular training as a beer sommelier, the team around the Ottakringer master brewer brings the participants closer to everything important and worth knowing about beer in order to become a true expert in beer and brewing culture.

What does a beer sommelier actually do?

A great deal, according to the Austrian Brewery Association: "Beer sommeliers concentrate on beer as a cultural drink. They regard themselves as advisers for both the guests and the restaurateurs. The guest receives information about the beer production process, selecting the right beer for a particular dish, and finds out everything about the positive, healthy effects of moderate beer consumption. He learns how to orient his senses to pleasurable beer consumption in beer seminars and tasting sessions. The beer sommelier is responsible for the quality of the beer that is served, and the perfect presentation of the beer to the guest. He designs the beer menu, advises the chef concerning beer dishes, and organises beer purchasing. He increases beer turnover by means of active beer marketing. He is familiar with beer production and is also capable of working in breweries as a field service employee or during brewery tours.” (Austrian Brewery Association)

“Beer sommeliers are experts who are employed specially for the promotion and preservation of Austrian beer and brewing culture. They know that they should describe beer as one of the oldest cultural drinks and convey this to their guests.”
